When and where did you graduate from?

I completed my undergraduate training from the University of Otago in 2009 and then completed my specialist oral surgery training from the University of Sydney in 2019. I had the pleasure of learning from two fantastic universities.

What is the most enjoyable part of your role?

Nothing is better than using a scalpel but being a specialist, I get a lot of satisfaction from teaching students and other dentists how to improve their skills and learning from cases.

What are your dental interests?

All aspects of oral surgery but specifically paediatric orthodontic surgery/pathology, complex implantology and oro-facial pain

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Long distance running – I hope to complete my first 62km ultra marathon.

What is the most enjoyable part of your role?

What I love most is being able to make genuine differences to my patients lives - almost immediately in many cases.

What are your dental interests?

I genuinely enjoy general dentistry and I like the variety it offers. In saying so I enjoy comprehensive dentistry, oral surgery, implant treatment and all things digital.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I'm an avid hobbyist photographer and a weekend warrior getting out onto the hockey field.

Julia Smith

When and where did you graduate from?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Distinction from The University of Otago in 2011 and spent two years with the Hutt Valley DHB as an Oral and Maxillofacial House Officer.

After almost 5 ½ years in private practice roles in Auckland, I headed offshore. Based out of Amsterdam for over two years, my last role was a Clinical Lead.

In 2019 I returned to New Zealand to take up orthodontist training at the University of Otago.

When and where did you graduate from?

I graduated from The University of Otago in 2017.

What is the most enjoyable part of your role?

Being able to completely turn anxious patients' impression of dentists 180 degrees is always the most satisfying aspect of my job.

What are your dental interests?

Right now, I am honing my skills in the endodontics, orthodontics, and implant rehabilitation specialties, but I have always considered myself a generalist and am interested in all aspects of dentistry.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I'm an avid foodie and cook, I’m always keen on trying out new restaurants and ingredients. Recently, I've also gone back to my dental technology roots and started dabbling in amateur jewellery making.

Jareth Lau

When and where did you graduate from?

I graduated from the University of Otago in 2012.

What is the most enjoyable part of your role?

I love taking teeth out but generally I enjoy my job so much because of the patients who need a range of different things done. I can provide all of those as a general dentist to take them from a point where they may be embarrassed or unhappy with their teeth to having a healthy mouth and a nice smile.

What are your dental interests?

I’m passionate about all things dentistry and really like the variety that general dentistry provides.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I love sports, animals, and nature. I love the great outdoors and have seen animals migrating across Africa and the national parks of North America. I attended some memorable sports matches as well.
